The project involved the construction of a new 120,000 sq ft Tesco superstore on a brownfield site. The available area on the site was such that the superstore was designed on “stilts” to allow customer parking beneath. The local authority and other interested parties were keen to produce an iconic building for this gateway site and the resulting design included a curved sinusoidal roof with 15m high frameless glazed walls suspended from the steel.

S278 Works – Ashley Way, Widnes

MJMC were appointed by Morbaine Ltd to provide highway engineering services for the new Tesco development in Widnes.

The S278 contract value was circa £750k and the highway works were located on Lugsdale Road, Pool Street and Ashley Way. These are intended to serve the new Tesco development. The works generally fall within Halton Borough Council adopted highway and consist of the following works:

Remodeling of Pool Street and widening to allow 2 way traffic for store access.

  • Signalisation of the Junction of Pool Street and Lugsdale Road.
  • Resurfacing of Lugsdale Road throughout the length of the works.
  • Improvement works and widening to footway to provide 3m shared cycleway/footway on site side of Lugsdale Road.
  • Provision of new controlled crossing close to roundabout at the end of Lugsdale Road.
  • Provision of left turn filter lane off the Ashley Way arm of the roundabout onto Lugsdale Road.
