History

MJM Consulting Engineers Ltd is an independent practice founded in 1978 as the civil and structural engineering partnership Martin J Male Consultants which has progressively developed to become the MJMC Group.

MJM Consulting Engineers is the core company of the group which is a true multi-disciplinary consultancy including civil and structural, highways and traffic and geotechnical and environmental engineering.
FJ Architects are also part of the group and provide a full range of architectural services on commercial projects increasingly often as part of a multi-disciplinary service with MJM.

The group also originally included the IT specialists Sarcophagus who developed 'the-Project' extranet in house which is used widely throughout the construction industry.

We operate throughout the United Kingdom from our Wakefield office where we employ over 60 staff, many of whom have worked together for many years.
MJM operate almost entirely within the commercial sector where we have established a deserved reputation for rapid responses to fast track programmes with innovative, cost effective and radical design solutions particularly on difficult and brownfield sites.

We are well experienced in all forms of procurement, especially design and build, and our aim is always to be a vital and effective member of the development team.

We regularly advise clients before site acquisition on development risks and site abnormals.

We have retained the expertise to design and detail economic steel and concrete frames and therefore do not have to rely on sub-contractor designs.

We specialise in the following sectors:
  • Retail
  • Commercial
  • Logistics
  • Industrial
  • Residential
The majority of our workload in these sectors are repeat commercial projects for blue chip retailer, developer, contractor and institutional clients. We have formal and informal partnering and framework agreements with many of our principal clients such as Asda Stores, Gazeley Properties, Morley Fund Management, Argos, J. Sainsbury's and Toys R Us.

We find that we rarely work for clients just once only.
MJM Consulting Engineers believe that the best interests of our clients and the wider world are entirely consistent with our environmental policy which is to reduce the demand for energy intensive materials such as concrete, steel and asphalt by means of careful and economic design and specification which in gives lower building costs.

Wherever possible we prepare sites by re-cycling demolition materials and remediate contamination in situ. We also ensure that materials removed from site are kept to an absolute minimum to reduce costs and minimize the impact on increasingly scarce landfill sites.

We encourage the use of video-conferencing to reduce unnecessary travelling and regard environmental awareness and good practice as synonymous with reduced costs and increased efficiency.

We have been appointed by Asda Stores as engineers for their forthcoming low carbon store at Bootle due on site in late 2007. We intend to apply the learning from this project onto future projects for example the timber frame , maximum cement replacement in concrete and re-cycled aggregates in concrete and blacktop. As always we will recycle and re-use wherever possible existing materials and treat the site as a resource not as a problem.

We believe that we are currently living beyond our planet`s sustainable limit and if we do not individually and collectively tackle this the consequences of global warming, rising sea levels and resource depletion will force us to change. Sustainability is no longer an option.....it is an imperative if we are not to ruin our planet for future generations.

We fully acknowledge that construction sites are dangerous and we constantly seek to minimize risk by careful design and adherence to CDM regulations.

All of our staff required to visit sites must carry current CSCS cards and are provided with all necessary safety equipment and clothing. Inspections of existing buildings are carried out by staff working in pairs if judged necessary.

We have regular external audits of our office safety management systems and the working environment.
